EXPLORING THE EFFECT OF STUDENS’ NATIVE LANGUAGE ACCENT ON ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION: STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES AND THEIR PERCEPTIONS

Abstract


This study aims to examine the influence of students’ native language accent, specifically the Banjar accent, on their English pronunciation. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through pronunciation tests, audio recordings, and semi-structured interviews involving nine 11th-grade students at MAN 1 Hulu Sungai Utara. The findings reveal that the Banjar accent significantly affects both segmental (consonant and vowel sounds) and suprasegmental (intonation, word stress, and rhythm) aspects of English pronunciation. Common errors include the substitution of /θ/ with /t/, /v/ with /b/ or /f/, as well as incorrect stress placement and flat intonation patterns. Beyond linguistic challenges, students' self-perceptions regarding their accent were found to impact their confidence and speaking-related anxiety. The study highlights the importance of adopting inclusive pronunciation teaching strategies that acknowledge students’ linguistic backgrounds, with the goal of promoting clearer speech and greater comfort in spoken English communication.
